SHAMAN GHOST prevails in Pimlico Special - race replay
Watchmaker:  "Pimlico Special still has a name that carries some weight, and with a game victory in Friday’s renewal, Shaman Ghost added that name to a career résumé that’s really quite astounding. Think about some of the races Shaman Ghost has won. He took the Queen’s Plate, the Brooklyn, the Woodward, the Santa Anita Handicap, and now the Pimlico Special, and he’s not done yet. Shaman Ghost isn’t a Hall of Famer. He’s a good, hard-knocking handicap horse who should only engender admiration. But there are some horses in the Hall of Fame who do not have the CV he does."

YOSHIDA in James W. Murphy- Replay and result   XBTV Race Replay and Commentary by Jeff Siegel    TDN Result/write-up and replay  Yoshida trains on dirt by Bill Mott, but this was a turf race, opening the discussion could he compete in the Belmont Stakes.
Watchmaker:  "Count me among the many impressed with Yoshida’s dominating win in Saturday’s James W. Murphy Stakes. Yes, Yoshida had a good setup with an unsustainably fast early pace. But let’s not forget that Yoshida got his maiden win last time out in his first start this year (and only second career start) on the front end. So, that he came from way out if it Saturday with the flourish that he did, even if set up pace-wise, speaks to his quality."
Sunday Silence, Yoshida's grandsire, would be proud!

THE STORY - Seattle Slew had something to prove, along with his trainer Billy Turner, and his jockey Jean Cruget.  The knock on Slew was he had not really been tested, he had had it too easy. The jockey, Jean Cruget, it was thought that he might be distracted by some negative criticism he had received for a ride in an earlier race. The trainer, 36-year-old Billy Turner, who had never been to this level before, somewhat surprisingly handled with grace and patience the often chaotic atmosphere that is part and parcel of the annual running of the Kentucky Derby

Some familiar names in the ABC Wide World of Sports presentation of the 103rd running of the Kentucky Derby: Jim McKay, Howard Cosell, and race caller Chick Anderson.  Pre-race and post-race coverage, from the call to post to the winner's circle, travel back in time to those 'thrilling days of yesteryear' and listen to Gentleman Jim McKay and the inimitable nasal delivery of Howard Cosell, as they set the stage for Chick Anderson's call of the 103rd running of the Kentucky Derby. How the story unfolded - From the BloodHorse archives

TIME CAPSULE: 2009 - Mine That Bird '50-1'
This video tells the whole story of how the race unfolded, including the famous overhead replay showing the breathtaking rail-skimming trip that Calvin "Bo-Rail" Borel devised when his horse got squeezed out of the gate in the 2009 Kentucky Derby.  The amazing overhead replay, with Gary Stevens' description of how it all unfolded begins at 7:28 on the tape.

Basics to know
On the track, there are four different speeds at which a horse moves. A “jog” is another term for the trot, a two-beat diagonal gait. As speed increases into the “gallop” the rider will shift his or her weight forward, rise up out of the saddle and travel 16 – 18 seconds per furlong (220 yards). A “two-minute-lick” is characterized by a horse going one mile (8 furlongs) in two minutes, i.e. 15 seconds per furlong. The fastest speed at which a horse will exercise is “breezing”, where a horse will travel approximately 12 seconds per furlong. Most workouts for horses leading up to the Derby will be "breezing" at about 12 seconds per furlong.
